Note: Public access for Carpenter Valley ends at the locked gate, which is about 2 miles from the start of the trail at Alder Creek Road. Please do not ski or hike past the locked gate. Everything past the locked gate is private property.
If you are looking for soaring views of snow covered mountains and broad vistas, then Carpenter Valley is not the place to go. However, where do you ski and snow shoe in the middle of a snow storm with 50 mile per hour gusts over the ridges? Or where if it is a cloudy, wind swept blustery day? Carpenter Valley!
Set low amongst ridges on either side, Carpenter Valley is loaded with trees and sheltered from wind and/or blowing snow during storms. During storms and usually just afterwards, the tree branches are laden in fresh snow and beautiful with solitude, stillness and quiet, especially before about 11am (usually when everyone else arrives). Carpenter Valley is an excellent place to take your dog during winter. In the summer, there is periodic traffic on the dirt road, so it can be dusty for hiking and walking.
To get to Carpenter Valley from Tahoe Donner, head on Alder Creek Road towards highway 89. Carpenter Valley is located on your left precisely 0.5 miles past the Tahoe Donner campground. Sometimes during storms, and usually right after storms, the snowplows clear a large parking area at the paved start of the dirt road to Carpenter Valley. If you arrive early, turn around and back in when parking so it is easier to leave as the parking area fills up during weekends and holidays.
