Lake Tahoe / Truckee Hike of the Month Emerald Bay Waterfalls in Spring |
|
Emerald Bay is rich in colors as the seasons blend together in springtime. The warm weather, deep blue skies and shimmering blue water are contrasted by snow crested mountains and plunging waterfalls.
Eagle Creek, located at the apex of Emerald Bay, produces two sets of waterfalls every spring, Lower Eagle Falls and Upper Eagle Falls.
Lower Eagle Falls is near Highway 89 which winds around Emerald Bay. You can view Lower Eagle Falls from the north overlook for Emerald Bay. After you park in the Harvey West parking lot, walk about 30 yards down to the north overlook. From the overlook just look to the right (west) and you will see Lower Eagle Falls. You can also hike down to Vikingsholm Castle, about a 1 mile hike down, with excellent views the entire way down. Then take a short trail back up to the base of Lower Eagle Falls.
Upper Eagle Falls is just a short walk (about 5 minutes) along the trail towards Eagle Lake. The walk starts from the trailhead at the parking lot at the west end of Emerald Bay.

And they’re off to a great workout. The photos are from Thursday. That Sunday, the Amgen bike race was cancelled due to white out snow blizzard conditions. That’s Emerald Bay in springtime! |
