June Lake Side trip of the Month Mono Lake, June Lake Loop, Mammoth Lakes and Tom’s Place
|
|
June Lake is a quiet, sleepy fishing town in fall, with dramatic scenery everywhere the eye can see. June Lake makes an excellent base place to stay for day trips to Mono Lake at Lee Vining to the north, and stretching south to Mammoth Lakes, and to Tom’s Place. June Lake has a state campground and a private campground. There are numerous motels that are clean and very reasonably priced. Many accept pets. Our favorite places to stay so far are the Pine Cliff RV Resort and the Gull Lake Lodge, as they both allow dogs and the Gull Lake Lodge has one bedroom units with full kitchens. Both tend to book up fast.
June Lake is a scant three hour drive door to door from Tahoe Donner. Approaching June Lake from the north there is beautiful scenery when driving around Emerald Bay at Lake Tahoe, and over Monitor Pass. From there you drive along a long, high (about 7000 feet) plateau until suddenly you look out over Mono Lake, as seen in the photo at the start of this article.
The June Lake Loop is very scenic with fishing lakes, Aspen groves, and mountains that jut straight up from the basin of fishing lakes. From June Lake you can venture north to Mono Lake, where dramatic scenery and cinder cones await you. The visitor center at Mono Lake and hiking tours are fascinating. You can also hike the Lundy Lakes, or go west to Saddlebag Lake and Yosemite. South of June Lake is Mammoth Lakes with shopping, restaurants, Devils Postpile, Rainbow Falls, and hot springs to dip in. Further south takes you to beautiful Convict Lake. Still further south still takes you to some outstanding hiking at Tom’s Place. Just turn off highway 395 at Tom’s Place and drive up to Rock Creek Lake.
Enjoy the photos that follow. If you are interested in real estate opportunities in the June Lake and Mammoth Lakes areas, I can refer you to several excellent realtors whom I have met when traveling to the area. |
