Mountain Ski of the Month Sugar Pine Point
The cross country skiing and snow shoeing in winter along the shore of Lake Tahoe at Sugar Pine Point State Park is an easy ski that is almost flat. The above photo captures the historic Ehrman Mansion at Sugar Pine Point. During the summer the park service provides informative tours at the Ehrman Mansion, taking you back to life in the early 1900’s.
To access Sugar Pine Point State Park take route 28 south from Tahoe City. You continue south past Homewood and Tahoma on the west shore of Lake Tahoe (which is a beautiful drive). About a mile after Tahoma you will see on your right an entrance to Sugar Pine Point State Park campground. Continue south on route 28 past the campground, the highway will dip down, and then climb back up. A few hundred yards after you start climbing up there is an entrance to Sugar Pine Point State Park on the left, at which you turn left into the park. When you come to the self pay guard hut, please pay. Not only does your payment help support the state park, we have seen the park police ticketing cars that did not pay, so make sure to display your payment stub on the inside of your front window. There will be signs to tell you where not to park. There is a parking lot to park in. At the parking lot on the right there is a low brown building with men’s and women’s bathrooms.
To get to the edge of Lake Tahoe you follow the remaining paved road for about 100 yards to the Ehrman mansion. There is a great sled hill between the Ehrman Mansion and the lake that is popular for the locals. When you reach the water’s edge you can walk, snowshoe, or ski along the edge of the lake either north or south, with great winter views everywhere. In the summer, the Ehrman Mansion has a lovely grass lawn for a picnic lunch. |
