Lake Tahoe & Truckee Hike of the Month Tahoe Meadows to Brockway Summit
|
|
The Tahoe Rim Trail is like no other. For most of the trail you are on the rim of the mountains that circle Lake Tahoe. The views of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding areas are beautiful to behold.
For hikers who are tired of lugging a heavy pack and sleeping on hard ground, all of the Tahoe Rim Trail can be hiked as separate day hikes, so backpacking is not required. The 165 mile trail can broken down into 14 day hikes ranging from 12 miles long to 33 miles long.
Excellent information and great trail maps on the day hikes can be found on www.TahoeRimTrail.org. There is also an excellent book Tahoe Rim Trail by Tim Hauserman.
The hike from Brockway to Tahoe Meadows has expansive views of Lake Tahoe for most of the hike. Like most of the Tahoe Rim Trail hikes this is a one way hike, so you will need to have two cars to leave one at your ending destination. Make sure to bring plenty of water to drink, as the hikes are long with little to no water available from start to finish.
The hike is 18.9 miles long. However, if you hike from Tahoe Meadows (8840 feet) to Brockway Summit (7000 feet), much of the hike is down hill and fairly easy. To shorten the hike by 5 miles, there is a Forest Service road 16N92 that parallels the Tahoe Rim Trail from Brockway summit.
